Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has introduced a passenger-friendly change by extending the free parking duration at the Terminal 1 arrival pick-up zones. The airport has increased the complimentary parking window from 10 minutes to 15 minutes, offering greater flexibility for drivers picking up arriving passengers. The revised policy came into effect on December 26 and applies to both private vehicles and taxis using the designated arrival areas.
The decision was taken after repeated feedback from passengers and drivers who felt that the earlier time limit often proved insufficient, especially during peak arrival hours. Delays caused by baggage collection, crowd movement, and walking distances meant that drivers frequently exceeded the free parking window and incurred charges despite genuine circumstances. The additional five minutes is expected to reduce stress for both passengers and those receiving them.
Airport operator Bangalore International Airport Limited stated that the change is part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the overall airport experience. Officials acknowledged that arrival zones are among the most sensitive and high pressure areas at any airport, where small improvements can significantly impact convenience and traffic flow. By allowing more time without charge, the airport hopes to create a calmer and more efficient arrival process.
To further improve accessibility at Terminal 1, the airport has also strengthened last-mile connectivity between the terminal building and the pick-up zones. Shuttle buses now operate at regular intervals of approximately seven minutes, connecting passengers to the P3 and P4 parking and pick-up areas. This initiative is particularly helpful for travellers with heavy luggage or those unfamiliar with the airport layout.
In addition to shuttle services, electric buggies and dedicated assistance vehicles are available to support elderly passengers, families with children, and those requiring mobility assistance. These measures aim to reduce walking distances and improve comfort, especially during busy travel periods or adverse weather conditions.
While the free parking window has been extended, the airport has maintained a structured fee system for vehicles that stay beyond the complimentary period. Once the 15-minute limit is exceeded, parking charges are applied based on the total duration of stay. The pricing structure is designed to discourage long halts in arrival zones while still offering reasonable flexibility for short delays.
Airport authorities have emphasized that effective curbside management remains a priority, as unchecked parking can quickly lead to congestion and safety concerns. The revised policy seeks to strike a balance between driver convenience and the need to keep traffic moving smoothly around the terminal exits.
Overall, the extension of free parking time at Terminal 1 reflects Bengaluru airport’s broader approach to responsive infrastructure management. By listening to passenger feedback and making practical adjustments, the airport continues to adapt its operations to the evolving needs of travellers, ensuring a more comfortable and efficient arrival experience for everyone involved.
