In a strong move aimed at addressing growing passenger concerns over rising ticket prices, the government has announced plans to significantly strengthen the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) tariff monitoring unit, Union Civil Aviation Minister has said. The step underscores the government’s determination to keep a closer watch on airfare trends and prevent steep, unjustified fare hikes, particularly during high-demand periods.
The decision comes against the backdrop of frequent complaints from travellers about soaring airfares on certain domestic routes, especially during festivals, holiday seasons, sudden spikes in demand, weather-related disruptions, or operational constraints. According to the minister, a more robust and empowered tariff monitoring unit will enable the aviation regulator to track fare movements more effectively and in greater detail, ensuring that pricing practices remain fair and transparent.
With the strengthening of the unit, the DGCA is expected to rely more heavily on data-driven analysis, closely monitoring ticket prices across airlines and routes in near real time. This will allow authorities to quickly identify unusual or excessive fare increases and assess whether airlines are operating within the approved lower and upper fare bands prescribed by the government.
The minister reiterated that while airlines are free to adopt dynamic pricing models based on demand and supply, this freedom does not extend beyond the regulatory limits. Any deviation from the established fare framework, he said, will attract closer scrutiny and appropriate action. At the same time, the government has made it clear that it does not intend to interfere in the commercial decision-making of airlines, but rather to ensure a balanced approach that protects passengers without harming airline viability.
Highlighting the rapid growth of India’s aviation sector, the minister noted that increasing passenger demand, combined with capacity constraints during peak periods, often leads to sharp and sudden increases in ticket prices. Strengthening the DGCA’s tariff oversight mechanism, he said, is essential to prevent passengers from bearing an unfair financial burden during such times.
The move is part of a broader push towards passenger-centric reforms in the aviation sector, as air travel becomes an increasingly important mode of transport for millions across the country. By enhancing regulatory oversight and accountability, the government aims to bring greater stability and predictability to airfare pricing, offering relief to travellers while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the aviation industry.
