A tragic accident involving an Indian Air Force fighter jet has claimed the lives of two pilots after a Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district during a training mission. The incident has sent shockwaves through the defence community and across the nation, highlighting the risks faced by military personnel while performing routine operations.
The fighter jet had taken off from the air force base in Jorhat for a routine training sortie on Thursday evening. According to officials, the aircraft was conducting a standard operational exercise when it suddenly lost radar contact with ground control at around 7:42 pm. Soon after communication was lost, authorities launched a search and rescue operation to locate the aircraft and the two pilots on board.
Local residents in the hilly areas of Karbi Anglong reported hearing a loud explosion around the same time the aircraft disappeared from radar. Witnesses from nearby villages said they saw smoke rising from the forested hills shortly afterward, raising fears that the aircraft had crashed in the remote terrain. The region is known for its dense forests and rugged hills, which made rescue and recovery operations particularly challenging for emergency teams.
Search teams, including personnel from the Indian Air Force and local authorities, worked through difficult conditions to reach the crash site. Eventually, wreckage of the fighter jet was located in the remote hill area, confirming that the aircraft had indeed crashed. During the recovery operation, officials also found evidence confirming that both pilots had sustained fatal injuries in the accident.
The Indian Air Force later confirmed the identities of the deceased pilots as Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar. Both officers were experienced aviators and were part of a frontline fighter squadron operating the Su-30MKI aircraft. Their loss has deeply saddened the defence forces, with the Air Force expressing heartfelt condolences to the families of the two officers.
In an official statement, the Air Force acknowledged the sacrifice of the pilots and assured that it stands firmly with their families during this time of grief. Fellow personnel and defence officials across the country have also paid tribute to the two officers for their dedication and service to the nation.
The Sukhoi-30MKI is one of the most advanced and powerful fighter aircraft in the Indian Air Force fleet. It is a twin-engine, multirole combat jet capable of performing both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions over long distances. The aircraft forms a crucial part of India’s air defence capability and is widely regarded as the backbone of the Air Force’s fighter fleet.
Although the exact cause of the crash remains unclear, authorities have initiated a formal investigation to determine what led to the accident. Experts will examine flight data, technical systems, and other factors that could have contributed to the crash. Such investigations are standard procedure following any military aviation accident and are aimed at improving safety measures in the future.
The crash has once again drawn attention to the inherent risks associated with military aviation. Training sorties are essential for maintaining combat readiness, but they also involve complex manoeuvres and operations that can sometimes lead to unexpected emergencies.
As the nation mourns the loss of two brave officers, tributes continue to pour in for Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar. Their sacrifice stands as a reminder of the courage and commitment displayed by members of the armed forces who dedicate their lives to safeguarding the country.
