India’s civil aviation landscape is set for a fresh shake-up after the government granted No Objection Certificates to two new airline ventures, Al Hind Air and FlyExpress, in a move aimed at strengthening competition and expanding passenger choice.
The approvals, issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, allow both companies to move a step closer to launching commercial operations. The decision reflects the government’s broader effort to encourage new entrants into a market that has, for years, been dominated by a small number of large carriers.
Al Hind Air is backed by the Kerala-based Alhind Group, a name already familiar in the travel and tourism sector. The airline is expected to focus on domestic and regional routes, particularly in southern India, with plans to gradually expand its network as operations stabilise.
FlyExpress, meanwhile, is supported by investors with experience in logistics and cargo services. The company aims to bring a combined passenger and freight-focused approach, which could help improve connectivity on routes that are currently underserved or commercially challenging.
The move to clear new airlines comes at a time when concerns have grown over the high level of market concentration in Indian aviation. At present, the majority of domestic passenger traffic is handled by just two major airline groups, raising fears about limited choice, pricing power and the impact of disruptions when operational issues arise.
Government officials have indicated that opening the door to more airlines could help balance the market, encourage competitive fares and improve service reliability. However, they have also stressed that financial strength, safety standards and operational preparedness will remain key criteria for any new carrier entering the skies.
While receiving an NOC is a significant milestone, both Al Hind Air and FlyExpress still have several steps to complete before they can begin flying. This includes securing an Air Operator Certificate and meeting all regulatory and safety requirements set by aviation authorities.
Industry experts believe that if these airlines successfully launch and sustain operations, they could mark an important shift in India’s aviation sector. Increased competition is expected to benefit passengers through more route options, better connectivity and a more resilient airline ecosystem.
